Having been in Germany this summer, and being it is the month of October, we gathered together to get some good German food, San Francisco style of course. Suppenkuche in Hayes Valley is a popular spot, the line says it all. They don't take reservations for parties less than 6, and because of this the wait is usually an hour long. The hostess was great, very accommodating, so we put our names in, went and grabbed a drink at another bar, and by the time we had all gathered, we were just about ready to sit.
Get this, once you have secured a spot at the bar, order your beer in a HUGE glass boot. $21 for the beer and a $50 deposit for the actual glass boot (that you got back when you returned the boot of course). That really gets the crowd going, not too many other people were drinking from Das Boot. It felt like a drunken indoor beer garden, long picnic tables that everyone shared, and drunk people everywhere. There was singing and laughing, not enough room to dance but I bet if there had been...
The atmosphere aside, the food was very good. There were too many things on the menu that i wanted to order, but stuck with my initial choice which was the venison. Gebratene Rehmedaillions in Rotwein-Pflaumensoße mit Rotkohl und Spätzle $19.50, to be exact. Venison medallions in a red wine plum sauce with spatzle and braised cabbage. Can't get more German than that really. The portion size was spot on, and I still had room to drink about 1/3 of the Boot of beer. Needless to say I was full when I left, but also reminiscing about my time spent in the Mother Land. All in all, not a place for a quiet romantic date, but rather a place for friends to meet and drink, and eat very traditional German grub in the heart of Hayes Valley.
