In the HEART of the Mission

ok more on the outskirts of the hub of the Mission, 24th and Valencia, is situated a great little spot called Heart. They have great wines that won't break the bank, they serve them in mason jars (so not to be too pretentious), and some amazing food comes out of a very small kitchen. here's the story... the folks who brought us Kitchenette in the Dogpatch basically cook in their large space and schlep it over to Heart where it is then finished cooking to order. interesting dynamic... great food. Their wine selection is broad and offers something for everyone. with small plates in mind they have a lot of French and Spanish wines (they even have a traditional Spanish cider!!), and best of all, they were originally going to be a wine store, so all the wines can be purchased at cost if you don't stay and drink. every bottle is $9 less if taken to go. Some bottles are as low as $12! it's a great stop if you are heading to a dinner party and want to bring something a little nicer than 2 buck chuck!

we went on a weekday for what they call Brunch. the menu wasn't huge, but it was packed with yummy treats. the few things we tried were delicious:

braised goatmeat tacos
duck scrapple (essentially duck baked in polenta served with a side of cabbage and pears and more duck and only $8)
potato pie (beautiful presentation, a bit tough to chew a times, almost like a scalloped potato pie, minus the creamy part)
pork breakfast sausages.

topped it off with a bottle of great rose and we only spent $50 fro 2 people... not bad at all.
so if you find yourself in the 24th street area, forgo the papalote burrito we know you have eaten at least 20 times and try something new and different that won't break the bank. there's some good food and great wine to be had at HEART!
